Elections under biased candidate endorsements — an experimental study

چکیده

We construct an election game to study the electoral impacts of biased candidate endorsements. derive a set testable predictions. test these in laboratory experiment and find that observed outcomes vote shares are well predicted. no support, however, for our prediction relationship between outcome endorser's bias is non-monotonic; i.e., ex ante, candidate's winning probability will first increase then decrease as endorser becomes more towards her. Voter turnout much less responsive than argue voting behavior can be explained, substantial extent, by three behavioral mechanisms: (a) distinct levels rationality choice decisions, (b) conservative belief updating, (c) ‘partial competition neglect’, where voters underestimate correlation information released endorsement closeness elections.

Sorting Out Mechanical and Psychological Effects in Candidate Elections: An Appraisal with Experimental Data

The paper proposes a way to measure mechanical and psychological effects of majority runoff versus plurality electoral systems in candidate elections. Building on a series of laboratory experiments, we evaluate these effects with respect to the probability of electing a Condorcet winner candidate. In our experiment, the runoff system very slightly favours the Con...

Candidate entry and political polarization: An experimental study*

We report the results of a laboratory experiment based on a citizen‐candidate model with private information about ideal points. Inefficient political polarization is observed in all treatments; that is, citizens with extreme ideal points enter as candidates more often than moderate citizens. Second, less entry occurs, with even greater polarization, when voters have directional information abo...

The complexity of controlling candidate-sequential elections

Candidate control of elections is the study of how adding or removing candidates can affect the outcome. However, the traditional study of the complexity of candidate control is in the model in which all candidates and votes are known up front. This paper develops a model for studying online control for elections where the structure is sequential with respect to the candidates, and in which the...

Biased under-reporting of research reflects biased under-submission more than biased editorial rejection

Stephen Senn challenges Ben Goldacre's assertion in 'Bad Pharma' that biased editorial acceptance of reports with 'positive' findings is not a cause of biased under-reporting of research. We agree with Senn that biased editorial decisions may contribute to reporting bias, but Senn ignores the evidence that biased decisions by researchers to submit reports for possible publication are the main c...

An Experimental Study of Alternative Campaign Finance Systems : Donations , Elections and Policy Choices

We experimentally study the effect of alternative campaign finance systems – as characterized by different information structure about donors – on donations, election outcomes, political candidates' policy choices, and welfare. Three alternative campaign finance systems are considered: a full anonymity (FA) system in which neither the politicians nor the voters are informed about the donors' id...
